Take Advantage of the Warmer Weather-image

May is the time of the year where the warmer weather truly sets in, allowing you to be able to do many things that the colder weather would not. There are plenty of fun things to do outside of your apartment, which is why in this week’s Nantucket Gate Blog, we have a short list of activities you can take part in while the weather is nice! It’s time to get out of the apartment and enjoy the beautiful weather of Tacoma, WA.  Go on a Hike When the weather turns warmer, it’s normal to take advantage of it by doing outdoor activities. One of our favorite activities is to enjoy nature by going on a hike! Hiking is a great cardiovascular activity that exposes you to the beauty of nature. Depending on your experience and fitness level, there are various options you can choose from, so pick one that can handle and get out there! Remember to pack snacks, plenty of water, and a first aid kit just in case. Kayak One of the best parts about living in Washington is the ability to experience the coast. Enjoy the warmer weather by taking a kayak out on the water! Kayaking is a fun way to be near water without actually being in it, especially since the water is still going to be cold. Whether it’s a lake or in the ocean, you’ll be able to cruise through the water and enjoy the fresh air! Don’t forget your life jacket. Laze in the Park Sometimes the best way to enjoy the warmer weather is by doing nothing. Outdoor activities are fun and can get the blood flowing, but kicking back and relaxing in the shade on a sunny day in the park also has its allure. Lay out a blanket under a nice shaded spot, pack yourself a nice meal with a few drinks, and enjoy the warm weather by doing nothing at all! Things to Do in Your Apartment-image

If you find yourself in your apartment for an extended period of time, your regular activities can get repetitive and may not hold your attention. If you have the time, it’s a perfect opportunity to try something new. In this week’s Nantucket Gate Blog, we’ve got a few suggestions of things you can do in your apartment.  Read a Book If you’re stuck in your home for a while, you’re going to want an activity that can last longer than just 20 minutes. We suggest finding a nice book to read. There are a variety of books you can choose, but if your home stay is a long one, finding a series you can dive into is preferable. Take some of your free time to find a nice corner of your apartment and soak in some books. To add to your experience, you can brew some coffee or make some hot chocolate to enhance your reading time. Knit Have you ever tried knitting? Knitting is commonly known as something grandmothers do, but it can be a great activity when you have time at home. It may take a little getting used to, but learning to knit is fairly simple if you haven’t done it before, and all you’ll need is some knitting needles and some yarn. Knitting is also a great option for an activity to do while you binge watch a lot of shows.  Exercise Too often, we tell ourselves that we are going to exercise, but when the time actually comes when we have the opportunity, we make excuses. If you’re stuck in your house, take advantage of the time you have and get some work in! There are plenty of at-home exercises you can try out to find what you like doing the most.    Do you have anything you like to do when you have a lot of time? Manage Screen Time-image

Do you find yourself on your screens far too often? If you do, you’ve probably had it mentioned to you by the people you care about. Though you may not consider yourself addicted to your device, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take some time away. It can be a difficult thing to do, especially if it’s a part of your daily routine, but you can always try! In this week’s Nantucket Gate Blog, we’ve got a few ways you can manage your screen time. Schedule a Time  If you’re the type of person who works best on a schedule or if you find yourself getting onto your devices when you have free time, scheduling a time for your devices or a time without your device. Having a set time will give you a time to spend without your device, which will help you be more mindful of how much time you actually spend with your eyes glued to a screen.  Find an Alternative If you do find that you’ve developed an unhealthy relationship with your device, finding an alternative to your device time will help you distance yourself from the effects of screen time, and might give you something to displace your attention. Reading a book, exercising, and doing some crafts are all good choices, as they require intense attention to distract you from using your phone! No Devices in Bed Many people end up using their devices while laying in bed, and though it may be comfortable, it can eat into your sleeping time and be an unhealthy habit to develop. Do yourself a favor and keep your devices away from the bedroom. If you use your phone as an alarm clock, you can keep your phone in your room, but a walking distance from where you sleep. You’ll be surprised how much additional sleep you get when you’re not distracted before bed! Do you have any ways you try to manage your screen time? Self-care Tips in Isolation-image

If you’re going to be working from home or need to isolate for global health safety reasons, it’s still going to be important to take care of yourself.  Practicing social distancing is difficult and it can take a toll on you, especially if you’re the type of person who enjoys social interactions and being out. In this week’s Nantucket Gate Blog, we’ve got a few self-care tips for you for the times that you’re lacking in social interactions or stuck at home.  Good Hygiene If you’re working from home or have been isolated due to quarantine, it’s important to take care of your body by practicing good hygiene. Many people view good hygiene as a social requirement, and thus being isolated from society can affect whether you do the basic hygiene practices like showering and the brushing of teeth. Do yourself a favor and practice basic hygiene. Not only will you be cleaner than before, you’ll also have a better outlook, as how clean you feel can have an impact on your mental state as well.  Take Breaks Working from home can make you feel like you’re obligated to get more done, which may mean you sacrifice the breaks you’d take if you were at the office. Make sure you’re getting an adequate break every few hours to stretch your legs, get something to snack on, or just to get a change of scenery. Doing so will help you feel like you aren’t just stuck and will make you more productive and effective.    Eat Well Part of taking care of yourself is ensuring that your body gets the nutrition it needs. Though it may be tempting to order a pizza or get some drive-thru fast food, we recommend being mindful of what goes into your body and making the food yourself. There are plenty of delicious recipes on the internet, but it will be a little more time consuming than having someone else make it for you. You’ll be able to feel the difference when you take the time to eat well instead of binging on junk food! Do you have any tips on self-care you’d like to share with our Tacoma, WA community?
